ABSTRACT

Before and after 1910, the police regulation began in earnest and it has been regarded mainly as a colonial rules on the Korean theatres. However, this thesis tried to describe the course of the police control and its effects, not to focus on the relation of the colonial/colonized and oppression/resistance. The necessity of the control on the theatres must have been posed by the Japanese discouse of the theatre/manners. However it had been also posed by Korean intelligents in the newspapers. The police control on the theatres had not been posed by the Japanese power ex parte, but cooperated with the public opinion in Korea and conducted as a policy for the theatre reformation. Especially, hygiene and manners reformation was the necessary course of the modernization and civilization of the theatre. However, in the course of it, the theatres had been not only represented as a malificient space in the society of for, but also presented the Japanese colonial control on the colonized Korean as its modernizaion and civilization.
