A Study on The Caltrop's amateur theatricals -the spectacle of reality and sympathy-

ABSTRACT

This thesis is for studying on the modernity of The Caltrop's amateur theatricals in the social and the cultural context of the early 1910s. The Caltrop, the society of the working students in Keungsung(京城, Seoul) was established in the July 1920. They demanded the sympathy and the support of the society, and hold the various cultural business such as the public lectures, the concerts and the theatrical productions for raising funds for themselves. The Caltrop enacted the spirit of the sympathy and the mutual help which was the basis of the bourgeois society. The activities of The Caltrop was reported fully in the press, which ideally theatricalized the modern society in which the sympathy and the mutual help was being fulfilled. The Caltrop's amateur theatricals were still Shinpakuk(新派劇, The New Trend Theatre). However they showed the reality and the authenticity which Shinpakuk had never showed before, especially in the autobiographical drama like The Destiny(運命)(written by Yun Baknam(尹白南)) and The Poor(written by anonym). The provincial tours for raising funds was the highlight of the Amateur Theatricals Movement in the early 1920s. Especially The Caltrop's tour company was welcomed for staging the miserable reality of the working students, and got the huge sympathy and support everywhere they visited. The relay reports of The Caltrop's provincial tour in the press visualized and enhanced the community of Chosun colonized.
