ABSTRACT

his paper examines the uprising of 'girl entertainer' and the tastes of girl musical plays in early modern period of Korea. Bae Guja and Kwon Iknam might be the first girl entertainers in Korea. They were trained at Japanese troupes composed of multinational players and performed in many countries when they were early teens. They started their own troupe in 1929 when the performance of musical plays and revues abruptly increased in Korea. In 1935, Dongyang Theater was built. Many girl musical play troupes such as Nangnang and Dowhawon were established. Their musical plays in the theater became popular. Plays by girl musical play troupes reflected cosmopolitan sensibility through mixture of foreignness and modern images which could be found in international expositions. Actually the popularity of girl musical plays troupes was related to expositions which were boomed during late of nineteenth-century directly and indirectly. And the girl musical plays showed boyish sexuality for girls to play a male role. The girl musical plays were a distinctive modern culture.
