A Comparative Study of TV Drama <Queen Seondeok> and Musical <The Rose of Sharon>

ABSTRACT

TV drama <Queen Seondeok> and musical <The Rose of Sharon> have something in common in that they started from the historical recordings of the lifelong story of 'Queen Seondeok' and are the dramatic arts created from the writer’s fictional imagination. However, TV drama <Queen Seondeok> is a visual art reflected through Television, whereas the musical <The Rose of Sharon> is a stage art performed in a theatre. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the differences and similarities of TV drama <Queen Seondeok> and musical <The Rose of Sharon> by comparing the dramatic composition of the two works which called the same historical figure, 'Queen Seondeok' for visual art and stage art, respectively. First, this study compared the media of TV drama and musical. As a result, we came to a conclusion that it was important to reveal the similarities depending on the interconnected association among the factors that constitute this drama since the historical figures or events would be interpreted differently depending on the media used. Furthermore, this study compared the differences between subject matter and genre in the two works. As a result, it was found that TV drama <Queen Seondeok> and musical <The Rose of Sharon> were historical drama with a strong political coloring and fantasy musical with a strong religious coloring, respectively. As for the goal and relationship pattern of the characters appeared, characters in TV drama <Queen Seondeok> are politically confronted with the purpose of achieving a realistic goal, whereas those in <The Rose of Sharon> are spiritually confronted. As for the plot as well, <Queen Seondeok> shows a complex plot with different senses of purpose depending on the dramatic development of the situation, whereas <The Rose of Sharon> has a simple step-by-step plot that the character has a consistent sense of purpose from childhood and is pursuing for it. Conclusively, as a result of comparative analysis of TV drama <Queen Seondeok> and musical <The Rose of Sharon>, it was found that the two works summoned the same historical figure, 'Queen Seondeok' and sought to find the reasons and purposes of why the figure was reinterpreted in current perspective. It was also found that they were completely different creations because TV drama <Queen Seondeok> was a historical drama with a strong political coloring and <The Rose of Sharon> was a musical drama with a strong religious coloring.
