AB - 이 연구는 식민지 수도 경성의 종로 4정목 상업․오락공간이었던 종로 권상장(勸商場)의 공연 문화를 살펴보며, 20년대 박람회 문화의 확산과 권상장에서 벌어진 서민적 오락의 형태를 살펴보고자 한다. 1922년 건설된 종로 권상장은 1920년대의 ‘대경성 계획’ 및 종로지역을 중심으로 한 경성 시가정비 사업을 배경으로 건설되었다. 총독부 이전 즈음의 북촌 개발 계획과 지가 상승에 일본인 자본이 북촌에 진출하던 시기 건설된 권상장은, 일본에서 메이지 후기부터 건설된 일본의 권공장(勸工場) 문화를 모델로 하였다. 종로 권상장은 1915년의 조선물산공진회, 종로 야시(夜市)에 나타난 ‘관람/걷기’의 문화적 욕구를 지극하였다. 종로 4정목 지역은 배오개 시장(동대문시장) 등의 상업시설을 배경으로 조선인 유동인구가 많은 지역이었고 서커스단과 구극단체의 저렴한 가설무대 공연이 빈번하였다. 권상장 역시 개장 초기부터 ‘여흥관람료 무료’를 표방하며 영화와 연극을 위해 돈을 쓰기 주저했던 관객들에게 저렴한 여흥을 제공했다. 초기 ‘권상장 연예부’에서는 신파극과 기생 공연, 고래 전시, 대선술(大仙術) 공연 등 다종다양한 레파토리를 선보였는데, 권상장의 매력은 ‘대경성 환상’의 중심이었던 박람회를 연상시키는 오락의 문화체험에 있었다. 1928년 박승배의 광무대가 권상장 2층 공연장을 빌려 ‘권상장 광무대’ 공연을 벌이면서 종로 권상장은 구극전용 상설관으로 전환한다. 권상장 광무대는 신파극 합동공연, 조선박람회 예비공연 등 신․구 절충형 예제를 통해 권상장 공간에 특화된 저렴한 오락과 흥행, 박람회의 기분을 제공하는 예목들을 공연하였다. 이 시기 권상장에서 인기를 얻었던 공연으로는 박춘재의 공연을 들 수 있다. 재담 공연은 1930년에 이르러 ‘권상장 연예부’의 중심 예제로 부상하는데, 박춘재 외 ‘지깡깡이’, 김인호 등의 재담꾼들이 광고의 앞부분을 차지하고 있어 재담이 흥행장 공연에 정착되었던 과정을 볼 수 있다. 권상장과 종로 4정목과 같은 도시공간의 탄생은 재담이나 판소리 등 전통연희의 예제와 근대적 전시문화, 상품구경과 가벼운 여흥이 뒤섞인 20년대 도시의 여가, 오락문화의 풍경을 보여준다.
