Yadam(Historical Tale) and Yadam Contests as the Modern Performing Arts

ABSTRACT

Yadam was based on printed media traditionally, but in 1920's second half, Yadam was transformed the yadam movements by Kim Jin-gu and Chosun yadam sa. Kim Jin-gu was combined Yadam with theatre as modern media, so, Yadam was not any more Literary genre. Yadam contests that planned by him brought great changes in its train. It became a genre of modern performing arts. Yadam contests as a modern performing arts had some elements. The first was Yadam teller, the second was stage of indoor theatre, the third was audience who paid some money for admission, the forth was repertory about the Historical story of Chosun, the fifth was the backing of the media. Yadam teller was as like as an actor, that he performed yadam for audience, and he became a star. Yoon Baek-nam, who stands head and shoulders above Yadam tellers, was very famous star. The stage of Yadam contests was prepared any place included semi-theatre institution(a space built on public purpose like town house, village hall, school etc.) that could gather large audience. The audience of Tadam contests was without distinction of sex or age, and the admission that they paid was 20jeon(20錢) on average. The repertory was consist on increased audience's emotions, and the backing of the media made Yadam contests for a public entertainments. The theatre of the modern media made Yadam that continued to tradirional literary for a modern performing arts, and it was very dynamic space that performed a function to genre differentiation of Dam-classes as modern performing arts.
