ABSTRACT

Memory and fantasy work as core materials on television dramas which build on ‘everydayness’. Among them, those with prominent fantastic characteristics can be determined as ‘fantasy dramas’. From the viewpoint of this article, which understands fantasy as the essence of artistic productions, the fantastic of fantasy in television dramas indicate its degree of being depending on each work. For this reason, this article tries to explore the aesthetics and ontology of fantasy dramas as the maximum extension of ordinary television dramas, rather than analyze and interpret fantastic properties of individual works in accordance with the definition of fantasy. This article, to this end, examines how the fantastic of fantasy dramas exist and work, by means of the theory of possible worlds(‘life-world’ of Husserl comes at the head), the theory of communication proposed by Habermas, Ricœur, and Luhmann, and the ethics of the Other of Levinas. With this view, the fantastic of fantasy dramas are exposed the most in the process of destroying the boundary of life-world which we cannot transcend, by the intrusion of beings from other life-worlds. This provides us, living in the real world, an opportunity to realize that we exist as the Others as well and the only way to overcome the Otherness is intentionality toward the Other. Transcendental beings in fantasy dramas intervene in the revelation of the totality of life-world and enable viewers’ empathy for neighbors. In this respect, fantasy dramas make beings in the real world recognize the existence of life-world anew.
