ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze bibliographically Buddhistic scriptures published in the early thirteenth century, one of the most turbulent times in Korean history. An attempt is made to examine what kind of relationship was there between the historical situation and the publication of Buddhistic scriptures, whether these scriptures had any spiritual influences on the Buddhism and the public, and what was the implication of publishing individual Buddhistic scripture. Major findings are as follows:1) Nammyongsongjungdo-ga(南明頌證道歌) considered to complete twelve Buddhistic scriptures published by the Chogye Buddhistic Order and Susonsa, was published in 1239 by the offerings of Choi Yi who wanted to improve further the relationship between Susonsa and the military regime.2) Bophwagyong Kyehwanhae(法華經 戒環解), the theoretical basis of Baengnyon Kyolsa as well as the completion of three Buddhistic scriptures published by the Chontae Buddhistic Order and Baengnyonsa, was also published in 1240 by the offerings of Choi Yi for the same purpose of improving the relationship with Baengnyonsa.3) Koryo Chaejo Taejanggyong(高麗再雕大藏經) published in 1251, was also completed by the financial support from Choi's military regime. In conclusion, the publication of Buddhist scriptures and the carving of <Koryo Chaejo Taejanggyong> can be considered to play a role as a centripetal force which promoted the public who wanted to defend the country by relying on Buddhism.
