ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to analyze a handbook for the education of married women(Yeosasooji) which is compiled by Sang-Jik Rho in 1889. He was a great Confucian scholar who lived in Gyeongnam Province area, from the last period of the Chosun Dynasty to Japanese colonial period. The preface of the handbook is analyzed to explore the necessity of women education and the motivation of the compilation of it, and furthermore 1st chapter which contains the core subjects is analyzed to explore contents, citational literature.The results of the analysis are as follows : The fate of a family depends upon a daughter-in-law, so women have to be enlightened. But women had not enough time for reading many books. Therefore the author compiled a handbook for the education of married women(Yeosasooji) which touches the core for women education. The author omitted the contents related to the education for males.The core contents of this book is how to take care of husband's parents, distinction between husband and wife, male and female. To emphasize these items, the author replace the word of her parents with the word of husband's parents The main idea of this book is to promote the close relationship between a daughter-in-law and her husband's parents.
