ABSTRACT

This paper aims at the further understanding of the collecting of paintings and calligraphy in the Joseon palace by investigating the building royal repositories to preserve them. In the early period, the thought of collecting paintings and calligraphy in palace was not much expanded, however, during the reign of King Sukjong(1674~1720), the rules for preservation of paintings and calligraphy were more elaborated and its collection also came to be enlarged. In the 19th century, the huge amount of art works such as royal portraits, calligraphy, and masterpieces by famous artists were kept in several palaces. The Seunghwaru Pavilion and the Jipgyeongdang Hall had functioned as the important places to preserve many art works at the end of Joseon.
