ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze physical and textual characteristics of the Dong-maeng-rok. which records the pledges of three meritorious retainers, i.e., Gaeguk, Jeongsa and Jwamyeong Gongsins granted in the early Joseon Dynasty.The major findings are as follows: (1) Gaeguk Gongsin is the title granted to 52 people who contributed to found the Joseon Dynasty, Jeongsa Gongsin was granted to 29 people who repressed the rebellion of Bangseok, and helped keep the descendants of the royal family in the Joseon Dynasty, and Jwamyeong Gongsin was granted to 53 people who helped enthrone Taejo as the First King of the Joseon Dynasty. (2) ‘Gongsin Hwaemaeng’ is the ceremony in which people pledge their allegiance to the Dynasty, and ‘Hwaemaeng-mun’ is the document that describes the details of their pledge specified in such a ceremony.(3) ‘Dong-maeng-rok’ published in one volume with the wooden-types, documents the ‘Hwaemaeng’ ceremony of 66 meritorious retainers in the early Joseon Dynasty, held in November 16th, 1404 (Taejong 4).
