ABSTRACT

This study examines the newly discovered Yeogkwa Yujib(譯科類輯) which reorganizes Yeogkwa Bangmok(譯科榜目), the list of the successful applicants for Yeogkwa(譯科) in the Joseon Dynasty. The results of analysis are as follows: 1) Yeogkwa Yujib, known so far to be published in 1882, was actually published in 1888. 2) Yeogkwa Yujib consists of the index of persons, their family lines, 'the others' and special section. 'The others' and special section are not included in Yeogkwa Bangmok and Yeogkwa Bo(譯科譜). 3) The period covered in Yeogkwa Yujib spans from 1498 through 1888, while Yeogkwa Bo covers the period between 1807 through 1891. Yeogkwa Yujib is a biographical source which records the information about most of the successful applicants who passed Yeogkwa during this period. 4) Yeogkwa Yujib contains 57 family names and 221 family origins, and therefore makes it possible to trace which families in the Chungin (middle people) class entered into or withdrew from the occupation of interpreters between the late 15th century through the late 19th century. 5) Yeogkwa Yujib, as a biographical information source, can be used to retrieve the name of successful applicants, omitted from Yeogkwa Bo, and who topped the examinations, and search them by period. 6) The analysis of Yeogkwa Yujib shows such problems as the omission of records and misspellings. It was found that the omission of records was caused by the missing records of Yeogkwa Bangmok, and misspellings were corrected in this study. It seems that some problems regarding some applicants successful in Yeogkwa could be solved by reproducing Yeogkwa Bangmok from Yeogkwa Yujib. Overall, Yeogkwa Yujib is a historical biographical source which has an extensive coverage and an outstanding retrieval function in modern sense of the word. It is expected that this study will contribute to the better understanding of applicants successful in Yeogkwa in various aspects.
