AB - The purpose of this research is to overcome the shortcomings of KORMARC by transforming KORMARC data for old books to XML data. This research covers three aspects: ⅰ) the theoretical approach; ⅱ) the design and implementation of XML transformation module; and ⅲ) the comparison between XML transformation module of old books on KORMARC format and other transformation program. Conclusions are as follows: 1) As meta language, a standardized XML, which has a format to send structured documents on web, was evaluated to be one of ways to overcome KORMARC’s problems. DC, XML phrase theory and RDF Syntax in the transformation format were evaluated to be the most appropriate method. 2) In order to transform XML data for old books, the structure of KORMARC for old books was analyzed in designing the transformation elements. Transformation format was based on Dublin Core elements, and structure phrases were written by mapping transformation elements with some of RDF Syntax application. The transformation program converts KORMARC data for old books to XML data for old books, and demonstrated the data information of XML data. 3) The merits of the XML transformation program are as follows: First, it has a compatibility and scalability with other programs. Second, it is designed to covert data for old books which were formatted before MARCXML ver 2.0 and KORMARC for old books were developed. Third, it supports protocols used on the Internet by mapping DC elements with signaling information field, format description field and variable length fields specified in KORMARC for old books. Fourth, this will makes it possible to convert into metadata, when it is designed and developed, on the basis of standard protocols, to support specific XSL Style Sheets.
