ABSTRACT

This study investigates the characteristics of woodblocks, which were collected in Jeju provincial office in the 1600s by analyzing Tamraji(耽羅志)―a town chronicle compiled personally by Lee Won Jin(李元鎭) in 1653 and Jiyoungrok(知瀛錄) edited by Lee Ik Tae(李益泰) in 1696, respectively. As a result of analyzing subjects, it is found that woodblocks for 51 titles were stored in Jeju provincial office in the 1600s, including woodblocks for 41 titles mentioned in Tamraji, and woodblocks for 10 titles recorded in Jiyoungrok. It is also found that most of those woodblocks were for the Confucian Classics, which were essential for the education of local students and scholars. Also, some woodblocks covers such subjects as veterinary medicines and medicines for protecting humans and animals from diseases, and military tactics for defending the local area, which shows the unique publication culture in the Jeju province that was much different from that of the central government.
