ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the comprehensive and basic topics in The Book of Dietary Treatment(食療纂要) which had been known be missing, but recently found. Cheon Soon-Ui(全循義), a royal physician in the early Joseon dynasty, wrote this book in 1460. With much interest in dietary treatments, he collected the documents on the topic, and wrote this book. It is one of the rare books regarding dietary treatments written during the Joseon dynasty. This paper 1) introduces Cheong Soon-Ui’s biography, 2) describes the compilation and publication of this book, 3) compares the items and description of the Sangju(尙州) edition with those of the Yangyang(襄陽) edition, which are two existing editions, to identify their differences, and 4) translates the names of objects written in Chinese characters in the Sangju edition(尙州板) into Korean and puts them in order. With many people interested in dietary treatment and health care in these days, it is very interesting to consult the content of this book written by the royal physician of the Joseon dynasty. This book is also valuable for researching the history of Korean language as well as medical history, because all of the Korean names of objects in the Sangju edition were still written in Chinese characters, more than forty years later since the announcement of Hoonminjungeum(訓民正音).
