ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to examine the characteristics of form and content of Sunwon-Gyebo-Giryak, the edition of King Jeongjo’s 7th year, when compared with the edition of King Jeongjo’s 3rd year. The 7th year edition of Sunwon-Gyebo- Giryak adopted a new method of compilation which ever since became the standard for royal scripts and was modified, supplemented in each dynasty and used until 1933. Noticeable differences in the physical characteristics was due to the addition of Preface by the King, Table of Contents, General Introduction, and Introductory Remarks in the 7th year edition. Also, the difference in the number of pages in each chapter was due to the variance in the size of Bangwak later inserted because of the addition, correction, or omission of texts on woodblocks. In the content, some records regarding Jangheon Seja, the father of King Jeongngjo, are especially noticeable. In the 7th year edition, it was recorded that he was called Jangheon-Seja instead 'Sado', and Jinjong was granted with the title of Seungtong Seja and then posthumously enthroned with the order of the deceased King Yeongjo upon the actual enthronement of King Jeongjo. Moreover, there was a part that King Jinjong and Hyegyeong-Goong-Hongssi were ambiguously recorded by describing that King Jeongjo succeeded King Jinjong and he was son of Hyegyeong-Goong-Hongssi in the annotation. This record was corrected as an important issue in the 7th year edition.
