ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical conditions of publishing and engraving the woodblocks of Gukjobogam (「國朝寶鑑」) printed in 1782, and the characteristics and activities of 144 engravers mobilized for this project. This study clarifies the reason for printing Gukjobogam from woodblocks, printing the base copy for reproduction with movable types, and mobilizing 144 engravers from all over the country. Major findings are as follows: The recruited engravers included craftsmen who belonged to Gyoseogwan(校書館), civilians, and monks; Since many highly skilled engravers participated in this project, the task of engraving could be done much earlier than expected; Among those engravers Yi Sitae(李時泰), the master engraver called from Gyoseogwan, Nam Taebaek(南太伯), Pak Unsu(朴雲秀), and Ju Sechan(朱世贊), etc. were the best, and 73 Buddhist monks were also excellent engravers especially selected from all over the local provinces.
