ABSTRACT

Jejung Sinpyeon(濟衆新編) is a medical book newly compiled in order to overcome the shortcomings of Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑), and to offer prescriptions suitable for new diseases according to the changing times. In this research, to analyze bibliographically the existing Jejung Sinpyeon, the bibliographic description and characteristics of its domestic edition and an edition published in China were examined. The domestic edition of Jejung Sinpyeon is known to have been published only once in 1799. But an examination of the extant prints of the first edition revealed that one or more sets of printing woodblocks for Jejung Sinpyeon might have been crafted. Variances in writing names of domestic medicines, and differences in the size of the frames for woodblocks and the size and shapes of the characters evidence this assumption. Without any record to confirm, only the result of an actual examination could be presented for this assumption. Jejung Sinpyeon were printed with woodblocks twice in 1817 and 1851 during the Qing Dynasty, which proves high demand for Jejung Sinpyeon in China. Those Chinese editions were reproductions and contained exactly the names of domestic medicines recorded in the first edition published in Joseon. Jejung Sinpyeon was originally planned by King Jeongjo who actually participated in compiling this book in order to make it widely used by the public. This research documents that Jejung Sinpyeon became well known to not only Joseon but also China where its woodblock prints were twice published, and considered one of the important medical books well kept and used even today.
