AB - In this study, the present condition of ‘The Awakening of Faith in Mahayana(大乘起信論)’, one of the basic Buddhist scriptures and ‘Four text sutras’ of Korean Buddhism, and its commentaries among the Dunhuang manuscripts scattered in the United Kingdom, France, and China are investigated. And any changes in the contents were examined by comparing its first edition, the second edition(再雕本), and the edition of Bangsanseoggyeong(房山石經).
A comparison of the Dunhuang edition of ‘The Awakening of Faith in Mahayana’ with the second edition(再雕本) and the edition of Bangsanseoggyeong(房山石經) showed some omissions, additions and inversions of the contents, and the use of characters in different styles in the Dunhuang edition. By comparing Wonhyo's commentary on ‘The Awakening of Faith in Mahayana’ and ‘Daejeong Sinsu Daejanggyeong(大正新修大藏經. Daizokyo)’, some omissions, new additions and the characters in different styles were also found.
