AB - In the Joseon dynasty, after printing of 「Sillok」 i.e. 「the Chronological Annals(실록)」, the Bureau of State Records(춘추관) enshrined these Annals at the Library in the palace, and established Uigwe-cheong(의궤청) to edit 「the Manual for the Procedure of Compiling Sillok」(실록청의궤) and 「the Directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」(실록청제명기). 「The Directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」 is a directory of compilers who participated in compiling 「Sillok」, and its compilation followed the tradition since the early Joseon period. The similar directories were inserted either in the latter part of the Annals or in 「the Manual for the Procedure of Compiling Sillok」. Most of 「The Directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」 published before the Japanese invasion in 1592, were burnt out. 「The directory of the Printing Office for Sillok」(실록인출청제명기) in the 16 century proved to be the oldest existing book among 「the directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」.
Since the 17 century 「the Directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」 was always compiled after the publication of 「Sillok」, but not all of them remain. The contents are very simple to have only full official titles and names of compilers. As time passed more contents were added such as the adult name, year of birth, year of passing the state examination, ancestral home, hours of duty and the business under his charge.
「The Directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」 for most 「Sillok」 do not have different versions, except the directory of King Hyeonjong(현종)’s 「Sillok」. They were printed by the same metal movable types, but one of them was separately typeset with the revised content. The reason fot its revision and the printers are to be studied in days to come.
There is some difference between the compiling officers included in 「the Directory of the Compilation Office for Sillok」 and those included in 「the Manual for the Procedure of Compiling Sillok」. There may be a few reasons for these differences, which is to be studied in the near future.
