ABSTRACT

This study had its purpose on examining the changes in history of the officialism and officials themselves and their duties as high ranking officials of the Government Paper Manufactory(Jojiseo-造紙署). 1. Jojiseo was first established as Jojiso(造紙所) in 1415 to produce papers for tributing to China and the government, to practice various techniques of making papaers, and to improve their quality. In 1466 the name of Jojiso was changed to Jojiseo, and it was closed down in 1882. 2. The official organization of Jojiseo was settled during the reign of King Sejong about 1413. The numbers and titles of officials differed in periods. 3. Most important officials in Jogiseo were Jejo(提調), Jegeo(提擧), Beoljwa(別坐), Saji(司紙) and Beolje(別提). All of those officials except Saji worked without being paid. They were mostly responsible for checking the qualities of papers supplied by local manufactories and supervising other officials or papermakers. 4. Until now a total of 57 officials of Jogiseo were identified.
