ABSTRACT

This study dealt with the culture of traditional printing in Cheongdo(淸道) area in Gyeongsang province. It was carried out as a part of the study on the publishing trend and activities of Gyeongsang province. According to the result of this study, Cheongdo area was already active in printing during the late Goryo Dynasty with the two leading Buddhist temples’ activities. They are Unmun(雲門) and Youngcheon (湧泉) temples, where Buddhist monk Ilyeon(一然) led active publishing activities. But, the existing old book evidences the printing activities of this area only in the early 15th century. Later between the 16th to the 20th centuries various books were published in diverse places. Local publishing began with the engraving of govern- ment publications led by Cheongdo-dwan in the early Joseon Period, and moved to the publication of Buddhist books by Unmun(雲門) temple, Suam(水巖) temple, and Jeogcheon(磧川) temple in the 16th and 17th century. In the 18th and 19th century, the publishers of books in this area were expanded to include govern- mental offices, Buddhist temples, Hyanggyo(鄕校), Seowon(書院), Sawoo(祠宇), Jaesil(齋室), pavilions and so forth, while the publication of Buddhist books were still active in the above mentioned temples. Meanwhile, since woodblock printing was preferred in this area, only four out of 81 titles published in this area were printed with wooden movable types.
