ABSTRACT

This study examined the annotations of Buddhist literatures in Haedong-munheon- chongnok, An Annotated Classified Bibliography of Korean Books, compiled by Kim Hyu in the 17th century. In this study, how he evaluated the Buddhist literatures, then considered a heresy from the perspective of Neo-Confucianism, was investigated. In the annotations of Buddhist literatures, Kim Hyu described the activities of authors rather than the content. Overall, regarding all Buddhist monks except Bo-u, the Buddhist monk in the Joseon Dynasty, Kim Hyu maintained his objectivity over the Buddhist literatures by annotating them in recognition of Buddhism, not from Neo-Confucian point of view.
