AB - Yukgyeonghapbu is a scripture collection which had been published by binding six important scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism. This study identified the publication history of Yukgyeonghapbu and analyzed them by classifying the participating persons recorded in each edition by their functions. This study also analyzed the prefaces of various Yukgyeonghapbu editions and studied the purpose of editing/publishing of Yukgyeonghapbu. It was possible to find 49 different editions of Yukgyeonghapbu however, only 30 of them were studied. 19 were excluded because they were changed in later period.
It was possible to find the first publishing of Yukgyeonghapbu in the preface by Seong Dal-saeng in the first edition of Yukgyeonghapbu published by Ansim-sa Temple(安心寺) in the year 1424. There had been a Geumgang Scripture edition which had been previously transcribed by Choi Sa-rip; however, it was difficult to read because it had been too old and deteriorated. Accordingly, the ascetic Shin Hyeon asked Seong Dal-saeng to transcribe Geumgang Scripture again. Seong Dal-saeng agreed and he further included five more important scriptures, in addition to Geumgang Scripture. This became the first Yukgyeonghapbu.
The result of analysis on 30 kinds of editions was that 28 out of 30 had been first published before the Imjin Waeran War (Japanese invasion to Joseon in 16th century). They had been mainly published during the early period of Joseon dynasty. All editions used relatively simple style by using Sajoo(世祖) Danbyeon style (text in rectangular box made of single line, 四周單邊) and 8-row/17-character format. Ansim-sa Temple which first published Yukgyeonghapbu is located in Gosan, Cholla-do Province. Since then Chollado area produced the largest number of Yukgyeonghapbu editions continuously.
