AB - Nabyakjeungchibang and Eonhaenabyakjeungchibang are medication guidelines wherein the administration and contradictions of oriental herbal medicine are written so that medicines for emergency conditions are prepared and stored beforehand and used in case of emergency. A predominant view is that this literature was written by Heo-Jun (1539〜1615) based on the record of Taeuiseonsaengan and the fact that medicines listed in the Nabyakjeungchibang were all listed in the Donguibogam except two.
The purpose of publishing Nabyakjeungchibang was indicated at the end of the book: “∼people in faraway districts or remote countryside have difficulties in using medicines although they have them. Thus, important phrases from classic prescription books are selected and published as a book for distribution.”Currently, two versions of Nabyakjeungchibang - the Chinese version and Korean annotated version - have been well preserved and passed down. The National Library of Korea, Seoul National University Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, Academy of Korean Studies, and Ewha Women’s University have copies, all of which seem to be the same editions although there are some differences in binding type, storage condition, or title signature.
Since Nabyakjeungchibang is a medical book that introduces the administration and contradictions of Nabyak, which is a prescription of the medical bureau for the royal family, it is connected to the quotations of “Naeguk,” also the prescription of the medical bureau for the royal family, in the Jejungshinpyeon published in 1799. Considering the fact that these two medical books revealed the prescriptions of the medical bureau for the royal family to the general public in the remote countryside, the love for people by relieving them from diseases can be understood. When prescriptions quoted as “Naeguk” in the Jejungshinpyeon were compared with prescriptions in the Eonhaenabyakjeungchibang, 17 out of 36 prescriptions were listed in the Eonhaenabyakjeungchibang.
Part of the commentary during the process of registering Donguibogam in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register is a passage that cited the concept of preventive medicine declared in Donguibogam as early as the 17th century. In that respect, Nabyakjeungchibang, which suggests emergency medicines beforehand and lets people know of their administration, should also be regarded as one of the medical accomplishments of the Joseon Dynasty.
