This study examined the progress of reading theories in terms of period, scholars, and stages of reading and analyzed through comparison of major reading methods of Sarimdo School in mid Chosun period and Silhak School in late Chosun period. The findings of this study are as follows.
Firstly, it is in mid and late Chosun period when the greatest number of opinions and contentions on reading appeared.
Sceondly, reading theories brought up by Hwang Lee, Yi Lee, and Deokmu Lee, and Yak-yong Jung, who were active in mid and late Chosun period, account for 70% of total 50 kinds of reading theories.
Thirdly, in the case of pre-reading development stage, the value of diligence is being claimed in addition to attitude. When it comes to reading stage, the value of 1) attitude, 2) level of reading completion, 3) concentration method, 4) internalization method, 5) active method, and 6) additional method were mentioned. Regarding the method of post-reading state, record, abstract, repetitive reading, exposition and discussions were mentioned.
Fourthly, the comparison of reading theories between Hwang Lee and Yi Lee from Sarimdohak School in mid Chosun period and those of Duck-moo Lee and Yak-yong Jung from Silhak school in late Chosun period shows that they share the same reading theory attaching value on attitude of mind and careful reading. And it is also found out that Duck-moo Lee and Yak-yong Jung shares in common the reading methods attaching value on the attitude of mind, reading out and systematic reading. Duck-moo Lee’s reading theory is characterized by self-earning method, reading through key points finding, complete reading, and recording method, while Yak-yong Jung’s is characterized by selective reading and systematization of information.
