A Study on Early Typography of Japanese Edition in Taiwan

ABSTRACT

(1) There are nineteen editions of Japanese early type collected in Taiwan. Three of them are the only editions. (2) The material for the type was wood. The type-making technique in all editions imitates script writing style. The character touch is a mixture of both sophisticated and crude touches. Its technical level is middle-upper grade. (3) The typesetting technique shows evenly aligned vertical and lateral stripes of character trace. There is a wide variance in the skewed characters and thickness of ink color. Its technical level is middle-upper grade. (4) The brushing technique shows some inconsistency of ink color thickness and varies significantly with a few incidences of chinese ink spreads and double printing. Its technical level is middle-middle grade. (5) The typography level is middle-upper grade.
