ABSTRACT

This research investigated the casting forms of the metal movable types (Heungdeoksaja-type: 興德寺字) used to print Jikji(「直指」) in 1377 by analyzing Jikji’s printing condition. Major findings are as follows:1) It was confirmed that the printing condition of Jikji was very similar to the condition of the fifth volume of Dongnae Seonsaeng Gyojeong Buksasangjeol(「東萊先生校正北史祥節」) printed with the Large Gyemija-type(癸未字). In this research, it was observed that when a typeface of each character was divided into four parts, the printing density of one or two parts was thinner than those of other parts. By analyzing such differences in printing densities, the casting forms of those characters were examined. 2) It was found that such printing conditions uniquely occurred, only when the father types of Heungdeoksaja-type were cast in two separate parts, that is, top and bottom, and one or two legs of the top parts made in ‘the form of four legs’ with the sand casting technique, were imperfectly cast. 3) Therefore it was evidenced that the casting forms Heungdeoksaja-type were similar to the types in ‘the form of four legs’ produced in Goryeo Period, and recently found with the Jeungdogaja-type.
