AB - The purpose of this study is to examine the establishment date of ‘Jipangoguryeo bi’ by the comparison of character’s composition. Geng Tiehua, a Chinese scholar, insisted it as a stele of Gwanggaetowang period. Most of Korean scholars followed Geng’s argument. Yun Yonggu and Yeo Hogu read the characters in the seventh column as “好太聖王曰” and insisted that Gwanggaetowang built it. Meanwhile, Zhang Fuyou and Sun Renjie, Chinese scholars, read them as “丁卯歲刊石”, and Sun Joosun, a Korean scholar, “丁卯年刊石”, meaning that it was built in 427, 15th year of Jangsuwang. In addition, Sun Joosun, Cho Soohyun, and I stated that it was written in the clerical script with wavy strokes and therefore built after ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’ with little wavy strokes. Kwon Inhan also insisted that the sentence was more sophisticated, compared to that of ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’, and accordingly it could be build after ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’. Its shape with a triangular head was also developed when compared to that of ‘Gwanggaetowang bi’ in natural stone.
