ABSTRACT

This research investigated the Buddhist literature published at temples around Bukhansan Mountain since the 18th century. Various lists of woodblocks, including 「Nupango」 and a variety of historical documents, including 「Joseon Wangjo Sillok」, were examined and organized to analyze the trend of publishing Buddhist literatures in the area of Bukhansan Mountain. Major findings of this examination are as follows:1) A total of 25 editions were investigated to be produced around Bukhansan Mountain. Among them, four editions and two editions were published with metal movable types and wooden movable types, respectively, and 19 were woodblock editions. Especially four editions with metal movable types were printed with Jeonsaja fonts, and all belonged to the subject class of Buddhist scriptures. 2) According to the period of publication, four editions (20%) were published in the 18th century, fifteen (60%) and five (20%) were published in the 19th and 20th century, respectively. It was observed that two Buddhistic events on a large scale were held to begin the publication in 1851 and around 1882. 3) The characteristics of those Buddhist literatures showed ① there were many publications to pray for the safety and prosperity of royal families, especially, sponsored by Joseon’s royal family or their maternal relatives, and ② a series of buddhist literatures published at ‘Myoryeon Geolsa’, organized in 1872, were closely related with the practices of its organization. 4) It was confirmed that the books and editions published at temples around Bukhansan Mountain since the 18th century had been distributed to several temples or locations in other areas by Buddhist monks and their followers. 5) It was noted that a temporary palace at Bukhansan Mountain had a function of storing the royal books and registries and some important publications of royal families.
