A Study on Seowon Publications at Gyeongnam Province in the Joseon Dynasty

ABSTRACT

This paper investigates books and its editions, deemed clearly to be published by Seowons located in Gyeongnam Province to the year 1910, the humiliation of the nation and organizes and analyzes it. The books of a total of 44 species, in other words, the editions of the 56 kinds were investigated. An analysis of these found the following characteristics:First, these was published by 28 Seowons of 16 counties. In the county, Miryang-gun, Jinju-gun, Haman-gun, and Hamyang-gun was the most published. And in the Seowon, Namgye Seowon and Yerim Seowon was the most published. Second, 37 editions (66% of total edition) were published intensively from the reign of King Sunjo to the reign of King Gojong, in the 19th century. Third, the most of published books were categorized into the class of History and the class of Collection of Works. Individual works were the most abundant, followed by individual biography, kinds of genealogy were in. Forth, 77% of total books was printed with woodblock and 23% was wooden types book. Fifth, as the author, peoples with the most closely related to the books were all directly or indirectly related to the its Seowon. Sixth, the most of these books were related to the Nammyeong school, the rest were related to the Toegye and Young school.
