ABSTRACT

In this study, the invention and transmission of metal movable types in Korea and the West is compared. Major findings are summarized as follows:First, in Chapter 2 ‘The Casting Techniques of Gutenberg Types’, the assertion that the Gutenberg’s 42-Line Bible had been printed with movable types cast in the sand casting method of the Goryeo was confirmed. Second, in Chapter 3 ‘The Casting Techniques of Metal Movable Types in the Goryeo’, it is again verified and confirmed that 1) Jeungdoga-ja Types, ‘Goryeo Types with four legs’ found with those types, and Heungdoksa-ja Types were all cast with the sand casting method, and 2) especially Heungdoksa-ja Types were cast with the sand casting method used in ‘Goryeo Types with four legs’, which were produced with separate top-bottom parts. Third, in Chapter 4 ‘Issues regarding the Transmission of the Casting Technique of Metal Movable Types in the Goryeo’, the analysis of five perspectives, including Professor Hopson who tries to trace the origin of printing techniques of metal movable types in the Goryeo, strongly confirms the diffusion of the Goryeo casting technique to the West. Especially the analysis of historical facts asserted by Carter and Hudson, documents in Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, common features of Eastern and Western movable types, and various physical evidences (for example, Gutenberg’s portrait) shows the impact of the sand casting method of the Goryeo on the Gutenberg Types.
