A Study on the Current Status and Operation of History and Culture Rooms of University Libraries

ABSTRACT

This study conducts the investigation and analysis of the current status of history and culture room in the US, Japan, China, and Cheju-do, Korea and provides the direction for their operation with a view to contributing to the collection and preservation of local history and culture collections, local studies, and local cultural advancement. In the case of overseas history and culture rooms, this study found out both public libraries and university libraries are collecting and managing history and culture collections. Especially in case of university libraries, various activities such as data base building, information retrieval services and publication and researches. On the contrary, the domestic libraries, especially public libraries, conducts collection and related activities and some of the existing university libraries are reallocating collections by subjects or separate codes, due to space, budget, utilization problems, etc. Based on these, this study suggests the roles of university history and culture rooms as 1) the center of local history and culture, 2) the center of local history and culture collections network, 3) the center of local history and cultural education, 4) the center of local history and culture research, 5) the center of local studies.
