ABSTRACT

Sagi-youngseon, the 26 selections of Sagi, is the main issue of this research. Because Sagi, the historical publication of Samachoen, is too long to read aloud and hard to study, King Jeongjo selected 26 pieces from it and categorized them. In this research, Sagi-youngseon was compared with the original Sagi, especially for the order and title of the pieces. Then, the criteria of the collection was discovered through comparing it with other writing piece collections and publications. First, King Jeongjo selected the most special pieces from Sagi that contained main objectives. Second, he also selected the classics with his favorite characters among the 130 pieces of Sagi. Third, he selected the pieces with his beloved characters although those were not the masterpieces of Sagi. However, King Jeongjo did not choose all masterpieces for Sagi-youngseon if the story had main characters that he thought negatively. As results of this study, the hidden intention of the compilation of Sagi-Youngseon was discovered as well as the main objectives of the selections. He tried to put his political ideology and his respect to Zhu Xi’s Neo-confucianism into the Sagi-youngseon. This research has an academic significance because its research method has an academic importance which compares Sagi-Youngseon writings pieces and other kinds of writing compilation.
