ABSTRACT

While surveying BULAC-owned old Korean books in France, I was able to find cover patterns identical to Jikji. Jikji was one of Collin de Plancy’s collection and most of the BULAC-owned old Korean books were donated through him. For such reason, the BULAC-owned Korean books were examined, having assumed the possibility that Collin de Plancy may have directly involved in the cover patterns and rebinding of Jikji. From a total of 637 old Korean books, 300 books were physically examined and the rest were confirmed through microfilms from the National Library of Korea. There were multiple pieces where cover patterns were not well-shown through the microfilms, nevertheless, 105 books were identified to have the same patterns with Jikji, one book to have used an identical yarn, and another book to have used the same gold dust patterns. Based on donation numbers recorded in each book, it was found as a result of comparison that there was a one-to-one correspondence between the current collection and the contents mentioned by Maurice Courant as ‘L.O.V.’-owned in “Bibliographie Coréenne” and “Supplément à la Bibliographie Coréenne”. Through this study, it was revealed that Collin de Plancy did not simply collect books in Joseon, but reformed them cleanly, and systematically maintained the collection with collector’s marks and bibliography. This, in turn, has contributed greatly to Maurice Courant in terms of writing the B.C. It is believed that the covers of Jikji have been specially made by Collin de Plancy to preserve it for a long time.
