ABSTRACT

This study analyzes on the types of compilation of the Yeokdaemyeonggam(歷代明鑑) from the types of selected person and types of compilation based on the Yeokdaemyeonggam volume 4. The major findings are as follows: (1) The Yeokdaemyeonggam is a Gamgyeseo(鑑戒書) that consists of 27 volumes compiled by Hong Gwi Dal(洪貴達), Gwon Geon(權健), and Seong Hyeon(成俔) under the king’s order. Gamgeyoso is a type of record book containing exemplary words and behaviors of selected persons from the Chinese and Joseon dynasties. The purpose of this book is to educate our sovereigns and loyal retainers. (2) The Yeokdaemyeonggam contains the records of 320 historic figures. Of the total of 320 figures, Gungam(君鑑) contains records of 77 figures, Hubigam(后妃鑑) contains records of 44 figures, and Singam(臣鑑) contains records of 199 figures. Some of the records were reproduced from their source texts, while some records of the source texts were removed and some texts were added to the original texts. (3) Compared with the source texts, in Gungam, 13 figures were removed in the section “Good Manners(善可爲法),” while 2 figures were removed and 3 figures were added in the section “Bad Manners(惡可爲戒).” In Singam, 89 figures were removed and 9 figures were added in the section “Good Manners,” while 34 figures were removed, and 18 figures were added in the section “Bad Manners.” In Gungam and Singam, a total of 138 figures were removed, and 30 figures were added. Hubigam contains the records of all figures included in the source text without any removal or addition, presumably because its source text, Jewanghubimyeonggam, was compiled by the Joseon Dynasty. (4) As for the compilation style of the 88 subsections on 10 figures in 3 dynasties, 33 subsections reproduced the source materials, 24 subsections summarized the main points of the source materials (撮其切要), 29 subsections abbreviated the source materials by removing parts that are not critical(删其繁蕪), 17 subsections withdrew sentences from the source materials(去其全條), and 1 subsection added new sentences to the source material(添入新段). (5) By looking into the selection of figures included in the Yeokdaemyeonggam as well as the compilation styles for its Volume 4, it can be inferred that the Yeokdaemyeonggam was modified and compiled so as to bring them in congruence with the realities of the Joseon Dynasty, from the selection of figures to the contents of the lessons with regard to the figures included.
