A Study of Engraver’s Activity of Chosun Period Recorded in the Confucian Printing Woodblocks Kept in Advanced Center for Korean Studies

ABSTRACT

This study explored the characteristics of engraving, engraver’s information and their activity which can be checked through the text of anthology and document made in Chosun(朝鮮) Dynasty. Woodblocks in Advanced Center for Korean Studies(韓國國學振興院) were listed in the Memory of the World in 2015, raising interest in the academic community as well as academic circles. The woodblocks contain a variety of information that can not be viewed in the literature and can only be viewed on the woodblock. So far, there were many subjects devoted to Buddhist engravers inscribed with Buddhist scriptures. In Buddhist literature, there is a written record of engravers in many literature, even though the woodblocks are not handed down. However, private publishing materials such as literature or anthology can not be checked through the literature, and can be checked through the record of woodblocks. Therefore in this study, we examine the details of each edition of the text, the angle of engraving, and the distinguishing characteristics of the woodblocks.
