ABSTRACT

Sangyeokgwahae-Geumganggyeong is one of many translated and explained Buddhist scriptures by Baek Yongseong that contributed to the popularization of Buddhism. From the first edition printed in “new western metal type” to the fourth edition “lithographed book”, this work was published five times over the course of 15 years. His original method of explanation shows his identity and character. Moreover, this work is valuable in that it became the foundation of Vajracchedika prajnaparamita sutra translations in Korean. This paper introduces Sangyeokgwahae-Geumganggyeong in order of edition, which were published over the course of five times. The original edition was printed in 1924 but this was not widely known because the 1926 publication was stated as the “first edition” in the following publications. Sangyeokgwahae-Geumganggyeong’s five publications can be divided in two categories 1920s’ first edition and first edition revised printing and 1930s’ second, third and fourth edition. The second edition of 1935 was invested by three people and was the only edition that had a price tag for sale. Many terms in this second edition were changed to language used in Taegak-Kyo. The third and fourth editions were originated from the second edition.
