ABSTRACT

This thesis is the writings which elucidate of female consciousness in Yeom Sang-Seop's early novels. For the purpose this object, this thesis concentrated two works-<the watch night>, <an unsolved>-which motivatied axis of narrative with motif of free love and suicide. As a consequence of analysis, this thesis confirmed that Yeom Sang-seop did not recognized free love itself as important value. Yeom Sang-Seop recognized free love important value because it played an important role in the colonial Choson society. Free love played important in the colonial Choson society which opended a passage to modern subjects who resisted traditional convention and principles. This thesis interpretated two female characters as characters who personificated female consciousness in Yeom Sang-Seop's early novels. This thesis confirmed that violence and oppression of patriarchal ideology functioned the most obstacle and opponent power to modern subjects.
