ABSTRACT

This study investigated the formation process of notions ; "literature" and "education", which were featured in rhetorical writing written by Lee Kwang-Soo in 1910's. The purpose of this study was to make a close inquiry into Lee Kwang-Soo′s enlightening structure. Also, modernity of literature-training could be investigated by analyzing the interrelation between "literature" and "education" in the formative period of modern literature. The conclusion of this study was reached as followings. First, the goal of education was setup as knowledge, ethics, physical training in rhetorical writing written by Lee Kwang-Soo in 1910's and herein power of execution was added by the medium of "feeling" factor. Second, Lee Kwang-Soo rated the school education in 1910's negatively. This was not because he doubted the school education itself, but because he would reveal several problem-components of which the school education were composed. Third, education which focused on real life was setup on the basis of Social Darwinism, but also, showed sign of emphasizing spiritual aspects such as volition and desire. Fourth, the notion, presented in the rhetorical writing where literature is main theme, "literature which was fulfilled with the feeling" was planned on the basis of the triad theory of knowing, feeling and willing but eventually became a subject of enlightenment by combining educational factor, even though autonomy of literature was advocated. Finally, we could say that Lee Kwang-Soo′s literary theory was "Jung Yuk Ron"(情育論) It is true that Lee Kwang-Soo contributed to the establishment of notion of modern literature by emphasizing the autonomy of literature. But, from the view point of literary education, he also contributed to the establishment of views of education by the medium of literature and by means of literature. Also it could help to understand a conflict between romanticism and enlightenment, which was featured in Lee Kwang-Soo′s early stage works. It was a natural phenomenon, as Lee Kwang-Soo′s literary theory, of which notions combined "education" with "feeling", came to realize in his works in 1910's.
