ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to discover the aspects of tragicomedy in Saseolsijo and its aesthetical meaning. Tragicomedy is connected to the matter of worldview, perspective to read text itself as well as forming double vision, which let readers experience a smile and sadness at the same time. Tragicomedy in Saselsijo reflects the features of the late Choseon dynasty in terms of three different ways, 'character', language', 'structure'. First, features of tragicomedy by 'character' is discovered two different ways, forming empathy with the reader(assimilation) and distance with the one(dissimilation), through the difference of attitude the poetic narrator travesties oneself or object. Meanwhile, tragicomedy by 'language' has characteristics such as solidarity or dismantling of text itself according to the principles of metaphor and metonymy. Unlike these, tragicomedy in terms of 'structure' is created in the repetitive process of dramatic tension by two opposed voices or relaxation by two sympathetic voices, with speciality, 'dialogue'. Saseolsijo, which creates tragicomic characteristics in many different ways, deserves to be researched in that it implies glimpses of the medieval and ambivalence of modern signs, revealing optimistic worldview, the creation of anti-world, relativism and pluralism which are associated with a modern eye, etc.
