ABSTRACT

Hyugye(休溪) Yang Gyu (梁珪, 1848-1905) was a poet who was active in Gimje, Honam during the Modern Enlightenment Period. However, he was almost unknown until now. Then, I recently discovered his posthumous poetry collection, 󰡔Yang Hyugye Poetry Collection(梁休溪詩集)󰡕. And by searching various materials about him, I found out various facts including his birth and death. He was born in Gimje and lived there his whole life. He was a descendant of a fallen nobleman, worked as a private school teacher, farmed, and was poor, so he also did tenant farming. With the help of GeumGeum(琴隱) Kim-Ryun baek(金綸栢, 1836~1911) of the Gimje Gim clan, he also participated in the Uranjeong-Sisa(又蘭亭詩社). He was also close to Seokjeong(石亭) Lee-Jeong-jik (李定稷), a literary figure in Honam, and Haehak(海鶴) Lee-Gi(李沂), a modern enlightenment thinker. He left behind over a thousand Chinese poems, but after his death, only 228 were collected by his disciples. There were many poems about exchange and many poems that contained beautiful scenery from various parts of Gimje. Through this, we can get a glimpse of the various activities of local literati in Gimje at the time. His poems were romantic and emotional. His poems were close to the style of Tang poetry(唐詩風).
