ABSTRACT

This study investigates the use of conceptual metaphors in COVID-19 coverage by two major newspapers representing Korea and China: Chosun Ilbo and People’s Daily. Based on reports published between December 27, 2019, and May 5, 2023, it classifies metaphorical types and analyzes specific cases. The analysis reveals that the newspapers’ use of metaphors differed, reflecting the distinct social roles and ideological goals of the media in each country, even under the same pandemic conditions. Whereas Chosun Ilbo tended to foreground social issues and policy limitations, People’s Daily can be interpreted as exhibiting a discourse characterized by an emphasis on state-led responses and collective unity. These differences demonstrate that metaphors function not merely as rhetorical devices but also as important resources that shape perceptions and attitudes toward infectious diseases and society. Accordingly, this study argues that news reporting should move beyond conveying crises to strike a balance between individual emotions and collective discourses, while also contributing to social recovery and psychological stability.
