ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore changes in pre-service Korean language teachers’ attitudes toward grammar instruction and their lesson reflections through interview assignments with in-service teachers, while also analyzing in-service teachers’ perceptions of grammar education. An analysis of 65 interview reports revealed that reasons for respecting teachers centered more on rapport and human interaction than solely on teaching ability. The interview process allowed pre-service teachers to gain a deeper understanding of teachers’ efforts and educational realities, while strengthening their competence and motivation for grammar instruction. In-service teachers identified students’ low interest, interference from English grammar, learning gaps, the vast scope of grammar, and differing interpretations as major challenges in grammar instruction, while also noting its strengths such as systematicity, logicality, clear evaluation criteria, and ease of preparation. These findings suggest that student reactions and teacher–student interactions strongly influence teachers’ perceptions, and highlight the need to strengthen not only grammatical knowledge but also student-centered pedagogical approaches, strategies to foster engagement, and rapport-building in pre-service teacher education programs.
