AB - This study explores the diasporic existence of colonial Koreans and the evolution of their national consciousness through the "migration to Manchuria" motif in Ahn Soo‐gil's novels. Ahn portrays Manchuria as a harsh space for survival rather than an ideological refuge. His early works highlight the tragic reality of migrants failing to settle, alongside their persistent desire to build a self-sustaining community despite colonial constraints. This early aspiration evolves into a narrative of ultimate transcendence in his postliberation epic novel, Bukkando. By tracing a four‐generation family history, the novel illustrates the shift in consciousness from the first generation's primitive desire for land to the fourth generation's modern national consciousness. They realize that true settlement requires national liberation rather than mere physical land ownership, culminating in their active participation in the armed independence struggle. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how Ahn's narrative shifts the meaning of Manchuria from a tragic land of survival an active site of anti‐Japanese resistance.
