ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the social transformation of Won-Buddhism's great opening of spirit. Great Opening (kaebyŏk) of spirit is a concept that encapsulates Won-Buddhism's ideas. The idea is to build a paradise in this world by implementing religious practices in real life, using Buddhist ideas as the core principle. The desire for social transformation also seeks a Great Opening of spirit corresponding to a Great Opening of matter based on the realistic prospects that modern civilization made possible. Therefore, the theory of the Great Opening of spirit aims to achieve paradise in this world through practice with others and to change society, rather than engaging in individual practice and seeking nirvana personally. Sot’aesan believed that psychological reform was a top priority for mankind. And he wanted to reform the social order of the past through a new spiritual civilization to create a hopeful and prosperous world. Therefore, the idea of Great Opening of spirit is very practical, and has a transformative character that tries to change society in its entirety that goes beyond the salvation of individuals. In order to examine the characteristics and method of social transformation pursued by Won–Buddhism’s Great Opening of spirit, I will consider the meaning of Great Opening of matter as well as spirit. This paper analyzes the concept and method of the Great Opening of spirit, how the psychological awakening is applied and realized specifically in the doctrinal system of Won-Buddhism.
