ABSTRACT

The Great Opening (gaebyeok) thinking of Donghak (Eastern Learning) and Cheondogyo can be summarized as the ‘Great Opening theory of the trinity of talents.’ The characteristics can be defined as the theory of ‘Dasi (New) Gaebyeok’ by Suun Choe Je-u, the founder of Donghak, the theory of ‘Later Day’s Gaebyeok’ by Haewol Choe Si-hyeong, the successor of Suun, and the theory of Inmul-Gaebyeok by Uiam Son Byeong-hee, the successor of Haewol. The theory of Inmul-Gaebyeok consists of the concrete elements of heaven, earth and humans and, based on this thinking, Donghak campaigned for the Great Opening movement since it’s foundation. The ideas inherited and passed on from the Donghak’s Gaebyeok can be found in examples such as the ‘Gaebyeok-pa (group)’ or ‘Gaebyeok-hak (science).’ As such, while the Gaebyeok ideas of Donghak and Cheondogyo underwent various changes, they continued to try to propose visions based on the Gaebyeok as a way of addressing issues facing modern society.
