ABSTRACT

This paper is a study on the Sacrificial Rituals for Heaven of Daejong-gyo. The Heaven rituals of Daejong-gyo are closely related to the Sacrificial Rituals for Heaven of the faith of Dan’gun. In addition, the Sacrificial Rituals for Heaven in Daejong-gyo involve an act of religiously returning to the root of heaven, and it is the best way of praying by human beings to continue the great grace (大光明) of heaven on this land. The Rituals for Heaven in Daejong-gyo religious acts as its essence and phenomenon. The motives of this study are also related to this. This is because of the belief that the Sacrificial Rituals for Heaven of Daejong-gyo are not a simple creation of modern times, but a national ceremony that has continued in our history. However, despite this form of Heaven rituals being an important foundation for our national identity and religious culture, there have been not many in depth or systematic studies conducted. Therefore, this paper attempted to take an open and broad approach to the whole Sacrificial Rituals for Heaven of Daejong-gyo. I looked at the tradition of Daejong-gyo Heaven rituals and its historical development. Then, the modern resurrection of such Heaven rituals was linked to the Restoration of Daejong-gyo, which claimed to restore Palgwan (八關), and the consciousness was understood through the Seon-euisik (䄠儀式) enacted by Na-cheol (羅喆).
