AB - New religious movements in Korea have developed new religious ideas and practices by appropriating traditional religious ideas. Daesun-jinli-hoi (大巡眞理會), one of the representative new religions in Korea, practiced new interpretations and rituals about Heaven, focusing on the teachings of Jeungsan (甑山). In other words, Jeungsan was believed to be the Supreme God over the three worlds, so the ritual for heaven called Chiseong (致誠) was practiced for Jeungsan.
Chiseong, which is a ritual that continues to this day with the beginning of a religious order founded by Jeongsan Jo Cheol-jae (鼎山 趙哲濟), has been practiced toward 15 deities and the deities of heaven and earth centered around the Supreme God of the highest heaven (Jeungsan). This is not clearly expressed as the ritual for heaven, but it can be regarded as equivalent to the ritual for heaven in its meaning. In other words, believers have offered sacrificial services to Jeungsan, Supreme God of the highest heaven who presides over the three worlds.
Jeungsan taught not only that he doctrinally manifested himself as Supreme God or Sangje (上帝), but also that sacrificial services should be offered to himself by the followers. Believers in Jeungsan offered sacrifices to the living Jeungsan and presented the offerings made for their ancestors. They had a Confucian cultural background, but accepted such a ritualistic transformation.
Jeungsan declared a new religious idea called ‘Reordering the Works of Heaven and Earth (天地公事)’ and opened a new ritual religiously. Jeongsan (鼎山) received a divine revelation from Jeungsan and succeeded him. He founded a religious organization called Mugeuk-do (无極道) and enshrined Jeungsan as the Supreme God of the Highest Heaven (九天上帝) and established the doctrines and rituals. Chiseong started from the Japanese colonial period and succeeded Taegeuk-do (太極道) and became the present day Daesun-jinli-hoi. Chiseong is performed by the Headquarters of Daesun- jinli-hoi and is participated in by sincere believers, which will be one of the original and creative Korean religious cultures.
