Understanding Wonmyomyeongsim(圓妙明心) as discussed in the Surangama Sutra

ABSTRACT

In this paper, after briefly describing what kind of book Surangama Sutra is, we try to clarify what kind of mind is Wonmyomyeongsim(圓妙明心), which is mainly discussed in it. Surangama Sutra is a book that corrects wrong ideas or views about mind, thereby revealing the original mind of human beings to be the subtle and bright mind. It reveals the human mind as a deep one mind that encompasses everything, such as subject and object, me and you, mind and matter, rather than a dualistic discriminative surface consciousness. After raising the problem about human mind in the introduction(Chapter 1) of this paper, in Chapter 2 we will discusses, what position is Surangama Sutra in Buddhist history, when it was translated into Chinese and Korean, and what kinds of commentaries are available. And in Chapter 3, the core of the human mind presented by Surangama Sutra is explained as Wonmyomyeongsim(圓妙明心) and Gakmyeong(覺明), which is the original brightness of the human mind. And in Chapter 4 it will be clarified, how Samatha, Samadhi and Seonna form the basic structure of Sungama Sutra and in what sense they correspond to the process of enlightment(견도), meditation(수도) and certification(증과). Chapter 5 summarizes the above discussion. to finish the article.
